From Bill Mohler: Background on voting decisions & a proposal to alleviate conflicts by conducting voting in two consecutive weeks.

Dear Faculty:

On the question of flexibity in the balloting schedule:

Faculty member Patrick Coll has suggested that a second period of voting be held one week later than the current dates, to give those faculty who are out of town an opportunity to vote.  I am cc-ing Ken Hampton and our HR and faculty members who attended the 10/13 meeting (see below) and agreed to the 2-day voting schedule, in case they find merit in Dr. Coll's suggestion.  If so, they might best represent the entire Faculty by proposing to Mr. Hampton and Commissioner Mayfield this more accommodating approach to a fully representative ballot.

On details of the meeting to decide the voting schedule:

I have received some additional information on the venue at which the decisions were made concerning the dates for UCHC-AAUP voting will occur, and the people involved in the decision. The meeting took place 10/13 at the main offices of the Labor Board in Wethersfield. There were eleven people in attendance.  The sign-in sheet specifies that the meeting was not public, and that the proceedings were not to be recorded (electronically or on paper, presumably).  Karen Duffy Wallace wrote to me that she does not believe that minutes were taken for the meeting.

Only two members of the UCHC faculty, Donald Kreutzer (Surgery) and David Dorsky (Medicine), were present at the meeting.   They appear to be the leadership or delegated representatives of the "UCHC-AAUP Faculty Association".  It would make sense to direct questions to Drs. Dorsky and Kreutzer concerning how the assembled group handled consideration of faculty members' travel demands or clinical scheduling when deciding upon a 2-day span of voting.

Two members of the UCHC Human Resources department also attended: Karen Duffy Wallace (Director of Labor Relations) and Brian Eaton (Associate VP for HR).  The other participants were Kenneth Hampton of the Labor Relations Board, three attorneys (one from UCom, one from a private firm, and one from AAUP), a member of the UConn-AAUP staff, another AAUP member, and a faculty member from Storrs.  Edward Marth of UConn-AAUP was not listed in attendance.
