RE: General Faculty Meeting

At your suggestion, I have taken the initiative to create two resources which will enable those of us who will inevitably miss a meeting at some point to be able to fully participate in this process. As promised in my last email, there is no cost associated with the use of any of these resources, so a lack of UCHC AAUP funds is not going to be an impediment at this point. I for one am not interested in excluding anyone from this process, whether they are elected to union leadership or not.

A Blog for _congenial_ discussion and posting of minutes, important union information, etc. All who register are welcome to post comments (no anonymous posting) and any information sent to me by those wishing to contribute can be added to the blog at their request. No information on this website will be indexed by google or other search engines.

A YouTube Channel for posting videos of the meeting has been set up. I am sure that someone on the faculty planning to attend meetings has a digital camcorder. If not, someone is welcome to borrow mine. As before, this has been done without any cost to the faculty.

I feel that belittling and undermining the clinical enterprise of the Health Center, particularly if you are uninformed about the realities of clinical medicine, is unproductive and insulting to those of us who spend a great deal of time trying to make our facility a first rate place where people can seek care. I also think that the hostile tone of these emails, in particular the last one directed toward me specifically, is disappointing and unbecoming of the faculty of a medical school. We are all in this together, and I think that insults and hostility will do nothing but discourage people from participating in this process. We are all in this together, and I hope that each and every one of us participates in a polite and dignified fashion.

Respectfully,

Break away for a meeting on a whim? A whim? There are two meetings. PRIORITIES! There will be more meetings. The information will be transcribed for as many as possible. Jason Ryan knew that. If you feel that the cost of proper video/audio recording of the meeting is not an issue, then are you willing to personally fund it? Are you willing to appeal to the administration to fund this or waive the cost? Are you willing to do something constructive toward the effort?

I wholeheartedly agree with Dr Ryan's suggestions. Every faculty member should be involved at each stage of this process. I think that our experience with the election suggests that a comprehensive effort must be made to allow those with clinical and off-campus responsibilites to participate fully if we are all to feel represented and have ownership over this process. Those of us who have assigned clinical duties are not free to break away from our responsibilities on a whim. It should be understood that a significant proportion of clincal faculty will be unable to attend meetings for this reason and this should not be construed as a lack of interest or involvement.

Given the numerous free, open source options for creating blogs and posting video on the internet, I do not think that cost is an issue or a reasonable excuse not to make this process transparent from day one.

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to solicit your support in making two important changes to the upcoming union meetings:

1. The union organizational meetings next week should be video recorded and posted online. We have the technology to do this at UCONN. It is done every week for medical grand rounds (<http://mediasite.uchc.edu/Mediasite41/Catalog/pages/catalog.aspx?catalogId=a4c52db4-bb58-46e4-8d78-796c73c76f89> http://mediasite.uchc.edu/Mediasite41/Catalog/pages/catalog.aspx?catalogId=a4c52db4-bb58-46e4-8d78-796c73c76f89 ). Many faculty members will be unable to attend next week. We have faculty spread out from Simsbury to Farming, in clinics, labs, and operating rooms. To include only those who can make the meetings in person will exclude far too many of us from such a vital task. At a minimum, the meetings should be transcribed, and conducted with PowerPoint slides that can be posted online.

1. Man of the future meetings should be conducted via the internet. Instead of a meeting in person, we can set up a blog. Groups (such as the critical constitutional writing group) can post thoughts and replies as they build consensus. Voting can be done via email. This will allow everyone to be involved, not just those with free time to attend meetings.

I have made both of these requests to David Dorsky, who heads the AAUP Faculty Association. This is the 29-member group, backed by the national AAUP (<http://www.aaup.org/aaup> http://www.aaup.org/aaup), that has been sending us emails from @info.aaup.org. The other members are listed below. They have elected not to sign their names to the association emails but I feel we must know who they are since they are organizing the union for now. Speaking for the group, Dr. Dorsky tells me the above requests cannot be honored due to lack of resources. Essentially, he says they lack the time to arrange these things. I find this hard to believe given all the effort that went into the unionization vote. Plus, the national AAUP has large resources to devote to this effort.

As we saw with the polling last week, every vote counts. Participation must be maximized or a small group will end up representing all of us. Remember that the union will set dues which are mandatory. These may result in a decrease in our salaries of up to several thousands of dollars per year. If the union is effective, there will be a return on this investment. But we all need to participate.

Please reply to this email or directly to the AAUP Faculty Association members if you would like to see the above changes implemented.

Respectfully,
Jason Ryan

Dear Doctor Jason W. Ryan,

Now that the election is complete and the results are in, the process of organizing our faculty for the purposes of collective representation needs to be initiated. To begin this process, we are calling for a series of meetings to exchange information, solicit questions and comments and most importantly encourage the active participation of faculty in the steps leading to collective representation and bargaining.

The first meetings will take place on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 5:00 pm in the Massey Auditorium and Tuesday, December 8 at 7:00 am in the Keller Auditorium. At these meetings we will discuss the development of a constitution and the organization of medical clinical, dental clinical, research and education working groups to identify the concerns and needs of faculty and ensure that the constitution and the collective bargaining process reflects those concerns and needs.

This is now our organization and our opportunity to express ourselves for both our own issues and those of the institution. We need your involvement, no matter how you voted, to make this process work.

Participate in an agenda building working group. Sign up for a working group at the meeting or at Faculty Association WebSite<http://uchcaaup.org/signup_enter_form.php>
