Dear Bill:
I don't see how you can separate the health of the institution from that of the faculty. In my opinion, all these emails make many good points and I am impressed by the thought that has gone into many of them--it would be wonderful to have "mechanisms to support productivity and excellence rather than "punishments" for failing to meet arbitrary metrics." But the priority for doing this in these economic times--and everything takes money--is probably not high. It is my hope that AAUP might help us to push such priorities higher on the list. Over my 22 years here, I have felt that faculty--at least faculty like myself--had little voice in what happened here. When people tried to speak out, they could be classified as trouble makers. (The previous Dean used to reply to my occasional email that I had a right to my opinion even if it was wrong--end of discussion.) For me, it has been great to see these emails. Maybe this discussion will bring us together at last.
