Subject: UCHC-FA-AAUP collective bargaining petition filed and new website

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, the UCHC Faculty Association/AAUP has been conducting a card campaign to generate an election to establish collective bargaining for UCHC faculty. We are pleased to report that after a brief but very successful card campaign, the UCHC Faculty Association/AAUP filed, on September 17, 2009, a petition to the Connecticut State Labor Board to have an election. A copy of the petition has been sent by courier service to UCHC Human Resources to be posted for 30 days. This posting is required by the Labor Board in case any union, other than UCHC Faculty Association/AAUP, would also want to participate in the election. We believe this is an unlikely possibility. With the supervision of the Labor Board, an election date will be negotiated by the UCHC Faculty Association/AAUP and UCHC administration over the next two weeks. We will notify the faculty when a date for the election has been set by the Labor Board.

We want to thank all of you who have signed cards for this successful effort and encourage all others in support of our campaign to download the enclosed card send the signed cards to the UConn, Storrs AAUP. The card campaign and the filing for an election is just the beginning of the process of developing a strong faculty voice as a part of a collective bargaining capability. It is now necessary to conduct a campaign that will generate a majority vote for the UCHC Faculty Association/AAUP as our collective bargaining agent. The key to a successful outcome to the election is an effective and accurate exchange of information that will provide the evidence and rationale for a unionized faculty.

Toward that end, we are sending an attachment to this e-mail entitled ³Frequently Asked Questions² (FAQs) [copied to this blog, W.A.M] that addresses the FAQ document on unionization posted by the Administration and provides our perspective on the issues they raised. There are additional FAQ¹s we present that were not included in the Administration¹s website but respond to issues brought up by the faculty in the course of the card campaign.

The UCHC Faculty Association/AAUP has established a website for purposes of enhancing communication and information flow. The website is:
http://www.uchcaaup.org. We see this website as a virtual town hall for
the exchange of questions, concerns, position papers and references to literature on academic collective bargaining. We look forward to posting your communications, editorials or simply questions to add to the FAQs on the website.
We invite any faculty member interested in participating in any aspect of the campaign to please contact us at our e-mail address or through our website.
We look forward to an exciting and vibrant exchange of ideas and views as we head into the election.
