This e-mail provides you with an update on the status of the School of Medicine Academic Plan. You will recall that Provost Nicholls asked each of the Schools of the University to develop an academic plan modeled on the structure and format of the University Academic Plan. Once completed, the Academic Plan will set a vision for the School of Medicine and will inform subsequent, more fine-grained strategic planning efforts.

The initial draft developed by the ad hoc committee (Dr. Adam Silverman, Dr. Marja Hurley, Dr. Bruce Koeppen, Dr. Marc Lalande, Charles Huntington, Carolyn Lyle and Dr. Gerry Maxwell) is going through a three-step review process:
1) Initial review and modifications by the elected governance of the School of Medicine (Councils and the Oversight Committee)
2) Review by the School of Medicine faculty with suggested changes submitted for consideration by the respective SOM Councils
3) Final review by the School of Medicine Councils
We are now nearing the end of step 2. I want to thank everyone who submitted the many thoughtful comments on Draft 2 (see attached).
The ad hoc committee is in the process of considering all of the comments received and will incorporate those that it feels fit best into the particular format of the Academic Plan. A revised draft will be sent to the Councils for their second and final review. The Councils will also have access to all of the comments submitted on Draft 2 for their independent evaluation.
Again, I want to thank all the faculty members who took the time to review the draft Academic Plan and provide comments. I encourage anyone who still may have comments to send them to me for distribution to the appropriate Council.
Gerry Maxwell, Ph.D.
