Re: Coincidence?

The timing of the message was certainly not a coincidence.  What is important to ask, however, is when the "review" was undertaken and when it was concluded that "we cannot marshal the support needed to win approval of our proposed partnership with Hartford Healthcare Corporation."  Apparently, this was realized prior to the vote.  The timing of the message would certainly encourage the belief that there was causality.  Perhaps that was the strategy of the timing.

I didn't want to add to the conflict and rabid e-mails the last 2 days……I wanted to see how things turn out.

However, the broadcast message just sent out from Dr. Laurencin (attached) has given me pause.

Any alliance between Hartford Hospital and JDH is now off the table.  Some will see this as good news….many others, like myself, will not.

This occurred 2 days after the JDH doctors unionized; I do not see it as a coincidence.

At a time when we were trying to foster an important partnership with one of our closest  institutions, does anyone really think a doctors union will make JDH a more attractive partner? ……to ANY institution that may consider entering a close relationship with us?

We're unionized. It's done.

I just have a feeling…..deep in the pit of my stomach……that the changes we are about to go through in the next few years will be interesting to say the least.

Dear Colleagues,

After a review by the leadership of our Board of Trustees, they have concluded that we cannot marshal the support needed to win approval of our proposed partnership with Hartford Healthcare Corporation.

The Board and the administration remain focused on providing outstanding health care, educating the next generation of physicians and dentists, and performing breakthrough biomedical research.

Accordingly, we are working with the legislative leadership and the Governor's office to assess other options, which we will present to the Board of Trustees and Board of Directors as soon as they are ready.

Furthermore, as alternate plans develop we will continue to involve the faculty and staff and keep you informed.  We appreciate the support and input you've provided throughout this process.

Sincerely,
