All:
The message and the facts behind it do not suggest the proposal was off the table due to the faculty vote. The bottom line is that the proposal hinged on state funding for a new hospital at a time when the state financial hole is deepening. It is now a challenge for all to participate in, rather than read about. The position of the AAUP reflects that of the members; we all want to see the medical and dental schools thrive and that of course requires highly integrated and efficient clinical affiliations. Now it can be done for the benefit of the university with faculty joining the effort for devising the best arrangement rather than hearing about the most profitable one.
I give credit to the Administration for trying to do something rather than nothing in the complex health care system we all struggle with, and now, as part of the new arrangement we will be part of the problem solving even as we are advocates for members. Colleagues at Storrs have long seen the best interests of the institution as their best interest as well.
Much activity in bringing the faculty together is before us, but first a Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Subject: RE: Coincidence?
You might want to look at the Courant’s take on it - http://www.courant.com/news/breaking/hc-web-uconn-health-center-1120nov21,0,5270704.story
Their summary certainly does not lead one to think that faculty unionization was a deal breaker…or had anything to do with the decision.

The timing of the message was certainly not a coincidence. What is important to ask, however, is when the "review" was undertaken and when it was concluded that "we cannot marshal the support needed to win approval of our proposed partnership with Hartford Healthcare Corporation." Apparently, this was realized prior to the vote. The timing of the message would certainly encourage the belief that there was causality. Perhaps that was the strategy of the timing.
