Might I remind us all that this vote is being represented as a decision on the empowerment and voice of the entire Faculty? Silencing those who, by virtue of their work requirements, cannot attend a specific place and time is hardly in keeping with those goals.
Doug Oliver pointed me to the UCHC Voting Application at home.uchc.edu. These voting tools were used for the recent official vote on the revision of bylaws, I believe. I take it that they were accepted as sufficiently secure for that vote to be accepted as both legal and legitimate.
I was able to draft an election timed for 11/17/2009-11/18/2009 for the full 48-hour duration of those two days. It includes 839 individuals, including all SOM paid faculty and all SOM affiliated clinical faculty. Unfortunately, access to affiliated basic science faculty was not available. There are other groups accessible, should our full voting body include more beyond this list (I am not an expert on the extent of the coverage of the potential union).
Of note, Dr. Raisz (Emeritus) was not listed on the paid or affiliated faculty lists. But I was able to add his name from the full person database ad hoc.
I have also confirmed that I can access this application by VPN from outside the UCHC network. Access is not possible without the use of a VPN connection.
If the Faculty, Administration, and Union, (and perhaps Labor Board, if necessary) agree, we could carry out the vote (or at least the absentee and off-site vote) in this way, without excluding the many among us who will be away or abroad on those days.
A snapshot from my voting page appears below. I would appreciate if some recipients of this message could login at https://home.uchc.edu/ to test whether they have access to see this draft of an on-line election ("98" in the Election column is a link to the questions at hand).
