From Ed Marth: Online Balloting? [was Re: Important News on unionization effort. Election Nov 17-18.]

My apologies again for the use of email rather than have questions directed
through the web site where inquiry rather than annoyance will be the purpose
of communications.
The labor board will not be likely to rush around changing their rules to
accommodate all dislikes or likes of individuals. The rules for the Health
Center can be imposed and people will have to live with them unless they are
matters that can be bargained if the election turns out that way. Rules for
election are well settled and harassment to get them changed will be of
little use.
It has been decided for example, that people who work for the employer and
retire, and then come back to work part time, do not have the same community
of interest with full time people that others do where salaries, pension and
health care are matters of negotiations. Retirees may contribute in a
valuable fashion to research and teaching, but they are not in the eligible
category for voting. Nor are people who volunteer their time.
We asked for opinions and suggestions for some time and nary a word was said
about this in a timely fashion. This is, let's be clear, smoke to derail
choice and an election.
