Perhaps there are even more than 75 such votes. Perhaps not. Perhaps those votes would have changed the outcome. Perhaps not. Perhaps if more folks had gotten to the polls in South Florida, George W. Bush would have never become president. Perhaps not.
The rules were set a priori. The rules were followed. Those rules, set by the State Labor board, known a priori and widely publicized were that the election could be determined either way by 50% plus one vote. Clearly, not all are happy with the outcome but it's over. It's not a travesty.
I suggest that a more productive use of time and energy would be to become involved and work toward trying to embrace within the negotiated AAUP contract that WILL follow the differing points of view among what is a divided faculty. With regard to this topic, that is where I will be channeling my own energies.
It's time to look forward.
