From Jane Grant-Kels: RE: From Bill Mohler: Uncast votes

I have also remained silent on this issue for the last several months. Having worked at UConn for 30 years, I have come to love and believe in our institution. We must be sure that we are taking the right path and that a significant majority of the faculty are on board.
One of my faculty did not vote because she went to Keller last night at 6:15 and was told she was too late and the vote was over. Obviously they were referrng to a different vote and this was a major miscommunication. This morning this particular facutly feels very disenfranchised because she was not given the opportunity to cast her vote. Signage was poor at the Keller meeting as well as at the academic area where the union vote was taking place. In fact this faculty person walked right by the academic entrance on the way to her car and did not realize this was the site she should have voted at.
If a significant majority of the faculty wants to unionize, we should move forward and comply. . This is a democratic instituion and all should respect the will of the faculty. However I am very concerned that the margin of just one to two votes does not represent enough of a win to so alter our institution. I think we should make sure the vote is close to100% of the eligible faculty before moving forward with this initiative.
Please know that I remain loyal to our great instituion and my colleagues. I only want UCHC to be successful and for the faculty to feel empowered and be happy with their work environment.
Jane
